Empowering change through fair
trade since 2007.
How It All Started
Acacia Creations was founded in 2007 by Maura Kroh, a Pennsylvania-born entrepreneur with an addiction to travel and places unknown.
Maura moved to Nairobi, Kenya at the age of 23 and soon found herself working in East Africa’s refugee camps. Unemployment and poverty dominate the camps despite a wealth of talent, resourcefulness and determination. The missing key component is opportunity. Maura saw a simple solution: create employment and generate income through the rich handcraft traditions already thriving in the camps. And so Acacia Creations was founded as a means to connect the skills of remote artisans with global consumers. We believe in creating long-term employment that cultivates dignity, empowerment and permanent change.
Beyond Fair Trade
With production headquarters in Kenya, Acacia Creations now works in 7 countries across Africa and Asia with a network that touches thousands of artisan partners. We go beyond fair trade by creating jobs, providing training, and giving back to communities through our education and healthcare initiatives.
It’s easy to forget the impact our purchases have on the world around us. At Acacia Creations we try to show how closely connected you really are with artisan producers a world away. By purchasing ethically made goods, you make a very real impact on the daily lives of people in the most impoverished communities.
